
Monday morning, 8:ooam (midnight Sunday in MN)
To get to Masada (see earlier article), a tram angles up the mountainside to the mighty fortress that looms high above the desert. (It's worth looking at the Wikipedia link in the earler article to see how grand this palace really was.) It's a smooth, quick ride, that takes about four minutes.
No tram years ago. As I try to imagine Herod and his royal party coming "up to the cabin", I can't imagine the effort. Hardly makes it seem worth the trip. About the time you got there, it would be time to turn around and come home! Or for Roman soldiers tasked with invading the place years later. Not a fun assignment to draw.
Today, driving to the very south of Israel, near the Sinai Desert, to the seaside town of Eilat. Here's what I'll likely be staring at through the window for much of Martin Luther King Day.
