Street Geometry


The large paving stones of the street were laid out in a diagonal pattern, so chariot and cart wheels would not get stuck in ruts and move over the surfaces more smoothly.

Every so often, a "zebra-stripe" was inserted, interrupting the pattern with horizontally laid stones. This was the ancient version of a cross-walk.
