A school field trip came by one of the excavation sites while we were leaving Qurizan this afternoon. Kids out on a pleasant spring-like January day, checking out the ruins of an old village and synagogue.
The school bus pulls up, the kids unload followed by their teacher and two chaperones. The guys in the picture above. Yep, the two with the semi-automatic rifles. Chaperones. At first, I have to admit I didn't recognize them as such.
Our guide, Rabbi David, said that it is a requirement of Jewish schools in Israel when any kids are taken off school premises, that they must have armed guards accompany them.
I guess that must free up moms a little bit, not having to sign-up for field trip duty. I'm thinking it has to cut down on any rowdiness on the bus, as well.
