An earthquake actually caused much of the damage that destroyed the city. But I'm sure people not mowing their lawns, not picking up trash, not polishing their marble columns on the weekends, not voting "Yes" for certain bond referendums, and not attending to their general civic reponsibilities helped the decline along.
Last picture is the amphitheater. Still in nice condition. Can you imagine having front row seats for an A.D./B.C. concert here?
