Scythopolis Swim & Fitness (ca. 100 A.D.)

Welcome to the Bet She'an/Scythopolis Health Club. The town "gymnasium".
Once inside, you would find the sauna, a room that had a raised floor supported by concrete pillars. Hot air from ovens was pumped under the floor to create a hot and sweltering room. (The floor no longer exists, but the pillars and ovens have been uncovered.)
Once a person had worked up a nice sweat, they could go outside and use the outside exericse area. Who knows, perhaps some basketball nets were once attached to the marble pillars?

Later, it would be time for a dip in the pool. It doesn't lend itself to lap swimming, but sitting around after working out might have been perfectly comfortable, I can imagine. (Looks as if memberships may have lapsed, leading to poor upkeep of the pool over time.)

  1. Do you think they could use a trainer? I know Zach is looking for a new job...

  2. He would have to either wear a toga, or work naked the entire time. Either way, I found no people here working out, so I'm not sure what kind of business they are doing.
