I went out for a walk after dinner at 9:00 tonight (disregard the time stamp on these blogs....they seem to be running hours behind) and these young women and their machine guns greeted me on the steps as I opened the large wooden door of my Hospice (see directly behind the soldiers). Now that is high-level protection. So I asked if I could take their picture, and they politely obliged.
The streets in the Old City are narrow, often enclosed, and very spooky folks. Verrrryyyyy unnerving at night, like a chilling movie. And forget about lighting. Every ten feet you expect someone to jump out of the shadows with a long knife. Nevertheless, Jersualem, and especially the Old City, has a very low if not non-existent crime rate. I suppose since with very few people out and about, and half of those that are are carrying machine guns.......it might explain things.
Note that standing not too far from these female soldiers were their male peers, also carrying machine guns. Seemingly wondering why I was visiting so long and why I wanted to take a picture this late at night. No time to be overly pleasant! Who knows who may be dating who. I am sure we are all happy they are not in Gaza at the present time.
